XeroMotivation 3.0 is here!

XeroMotivation is back! After a two-month hiatus we are relaunching as an even bigger and better server! Enjoy more streamlined gameplay with the removal of plugins and features that nobody really used anyway. The hardware has received an upgrade of 1GB and the server has moved locations to provide a lower latency for oceanic players (Oceanic players, specific NZ and Aus player’s pings should be about half what they used to be, depending on location). The server is now hosted on the US West coast instead of the East coast.

XeroMotivation was a friendly community of dedicated players and that’s exactly what I plan for it to be again. I want XeroMotivation to be back to its former glory before the two-year anniversary in March so come join the server and help me make that happen!

1.7.2 development build of craftbukkit has been released

Now that the development build is out a beta build shouldn’t be too far off. Once a beta build is released I can finally begin work on the new server.

For the gametypes the new server will run, I have chosen Survival, city and arena as they were the 3 most popular choices in the poll. The survival world will be the only world open at launch but closely followed by arena and city as they will take more work to create.

I think a few people only voted once (you were given 3 votes) as evidenced by the fact that there were about 20 unique visitors to the blog after the last post. However, the current tally still stands. At the bottom of this post you’ll find another poll with condensed results. Only results that got a vote will be included in this (Challenge got a vote but as I was the only one who voted for it I’m removing it anyway.) In addition, I will be removing/renaming SurvivalPvP and HardcorePvP and labelling them as simply “PvP.” SurvivalPvE will just be “Survival.” You will get 3 votes again. I repeat, you will be able to tick 3 boxes so make sure you use all your votes unless only 2 or less interest you. Above the poll results I will be listing all the current options and explaining in (relative) depth what they each are.

New banner.

I’ve decided to change the XeroMotivation planetminecraft page banner because it was a bit of an eyesore. This will be the new banner when XeroMotivation 3.0 goes live:

It’s not very important news but it makes for some good filler content.

Game type descriptions.

These are the game types that will be available to vote on in the poll below. Take some time to read through them — you might find something you like.

Survival
This is regular old survival that’s been running on the server since the very first day it went live (almost two years ago. Wow.) Dig for blocks, make stuff with the blocks you’ve dug. Do I really need to explain survival? It’s the multiplayer form of singleplayer minecraft.

PvP
Same general mechanics as survival except you can kill each other.

Creative
You can fly, you have unlimited blocks, you don’t take damage, you can build whatever you like. This is another one I shouldn’t need to explain. It’s the multiplayer form of singleplayer creative.

Factions
One of the more interesting gametypes. You can start a faction (a guild, basically.) The more members you recruit, the more land your faction can claim to build on. As a leader you can wage war on other factions or become allies (and then together you can wage war.) The veteran players may remember there used to be a factions server alongside the survival server. There was a bit of drama upon release which caused a regular player to leave and took half of my regular players with him to a server he started. The factions server never recovered from it and sadly had to shut down.

City
A predetermined city layout will be built containing many varied lot sizes. You start off with a small lot and a few blocks (enough to build a basic house.) You can choose a job and earn currency for doing that job which you can spend in (at first) server-run shops and (once there are enough resources in circulation) player-run shops. Currency can also be used to buy bigger lots. If you have enough resources and money you could buy a lot and start a store, or rent out your spare houses (alongside many other things.)

MineZ
I ain’t explainin’ this. It’s DayZ but in Minecraft.

Arena
There are many arenas of all different types and difficulty levels. You earn currency from completing these arenas which you can spend at the shop for better armor, weapons and equipment.

XeroMotivation is dying

Hey guys,

I’m guessing you’ve all noticed: XeroMotivation is all but dead. It’s difficult to continue running a server that you no longer enjoy playing on. I love the server and have had many hundreds (possibly thousands) of great hours spent on there but I can’t stand playing anymore.

The problem that arises here is that I want to continue providing a fun server, yet I don’t want to continue running the server as it is. I don’t want to reset the server, I want to start from scratch. I want a new gameplay experience and I want your help deciding.

As the server will be offline for the majority of the time it is being rebuilt, there’s no better time to start than now: during the hibernation period between a new Minecraft update and a spigot release.

This leads me to where I need the communities help and your voice: what server type would you like to play on? You have 3 votes so choose wisely. This may only be the first round of voting, I’m not sure yet.

Server “hacked”

Hey guys,

Today I was made aware that the server had apparently been hacked. After some research (and after fixing all the damage, of course) I found the problem. It turns out that all servers running certain versions of bukkit (and any forks such as spigot) below a specific version were affected. The error in the code allowed players to log into a server as any other player. A couple of “unsavoury individuals” logged in as me and gave themselves admin privileges. The players have been banned and I have updated to the latest version of spigot so we should not encounter a problem such as this again.

These people banned a couple of players who I have unbanned. They may have also sent out mass server messages and such so if you see any mail from me please ignore it.

The hiatus is over and XeroMotivation is back to rise from the dead. Now if you don’t care about server details and just want to play, you can jump on it at:

For those of you that do care, here’s what’s what.

I have switched from fpsbox.com (the owner is presumed to be dead) to beastnode.com. The server is $25.46 USD per month and the premium buycraft subscription (allows me to have more donator packages and things like coupons, cumulative ranks etc) is $5.99 per month for a total overhead expense of $31.45 USD/month.

Speaking of Donator ranks, they’ve undergone an overhaul. The new donator ranks are:

• Coal            – $5
• Iron             – $10
• Gold            – $15
• Redstone     – $20
• Emerald       – $25
• Diamond      – $30
• Bedrock       – $50

Current donators might be wondering how this will affect them. Present donators will be moved to the new donation ranks. If the demand is there, I will recreate the old donator ranks and move those who wish to be moved back to them. This will only apply to people who donated for Donator, Donator+ and Modonator ranks.

If you have donated in the past, when you join the server please send Mondok a /mail and I’ll promote you to your new Donator rank ASAP.

So what was that about coupons? Ah, yes. Coupons. Buycraft premium allows me to create coupons for rank discounts so I did just that. There is a 20% off coupon and a 15% off coupon which can be used 3 and 5 times (respectively) before expiring. The coupons are:

Concerning the server outage

Hey guys,

The owner of fpsbox.com (the server-host) is dead… Apparently he’s been 6 feet under for a few months and fpsbox was simply running on autopilot. A few days ago the website certificate expired, then widespread fpsbox server outages began. Most people cannot start their server if it is stopped (I tried to restart it to apply some changes) and nobody can access FTP.

Because of this, I am switching to beastnode.com. As I cannot access fpsbox FTP I cannot recover any server files at all, so I’m going to have to start from scratch. All donators will stay donators and will be personally contacted once I have more details. I will attempt to contact as many ex-players as I can to notify them of this. For now, keep an eye on the blog; XeroMotivation 2.0 should arrive within the next week or so.

I am sorry for any data losses that have occurred but I will attempt to make the best of this situation by completely revamping the server.
